Choice of School

Eton College

There are now many options for school age (5-18) study in the UK. Pupils begin at the age of 5 into Year 1 and      continue through to the final Year 13 which they start at the age of 17. International students often find themselves perhaps a year older as they need to improve their language skills to be successful in the exam system.

There are many factors that will influence the choice of school: cost; location; entry requirements; language support; range of subjects; ethos of school; strengths of school; specialist activities; and university destinations. Matching individuals with the right school involves a number of key elements and an understanding of this is essential. The cost of study varies between £15,000 including accommodation through to £30,000+ and there are more opportunities than ever to study in the UK.

UK boarding schools: Private and Public schools are different to state schools. UK boarding schools consist of Public Schools and Private Schools. Both are similar in ethos and fees (£30,000 per year). Public Schools are actually private schools, and consisted originally of seven boarding schools mentioned in the 1868 Public Schools Act (Eton, Harrow, Charterhouse, Shrewsbury, Westminster,Rugby and Winchester). They are now grouped as UK private schools with many belonging to Headmasters’ Conference (HMC).

Entry is at 11 or 13 years of age.

Prep Schools – These are private schools that prepare students for entry at 11 or 13 into the schools above.

International Schools: majority (80 – 90%) of pupils being international. Offering the UK curriculum and boarding facilities they focus on recruiting students from outside of the UK and so have an international atmosphere.

Language Schools/Colleges are made up of 100% international students using the opportunity to raise the level of their English to enter the school or university system.
